Heritage Day:

On the menu in the Trench of Death

Sunday 21 April 2024

Sunday, April 21 is once again Heritage Day, with “Home” as this year’s central theme. What makes a house a home? A seemingly simple question, but with a much deeper meaning than one might think at first glance. What exactly creates that feeling of home? Home is a collection of experiences, from small moments to big events. It is the place where you share important feelings with people close to you. That sense of coming home, that’s what it’s all about!

During the First World War front soldiers are far away from home and separated from family, which forces them to turn the trenches and cantonments into their new safe place. On Heritage Day, the Trench of Death resonates with this theme and opens its doors to the public free of charge. Experienced guides provide general information about the venue, and a historical evocation illustrates the daily lives of the Yser Front soldiers. An active field kitchen even allows visitors to see and taste how and what was prepared at the front during the First World War.
